Binge Eating Disorder (BED) Overview
A person with this BED consumes a large amount of food in a few hours, at least twice a week. Having a BED means being unable to control the amount of food you eat. You are unable to stop eating, even when you are full. BED is a recently recognized disorder and is probably the most common of the eating disorders. Unlike other eating disorders (ie. bulimia or anorexia), more men suffer from BED but it is still more common in women. It is more common among the severely overweight but can be found among people of average weight. About 50% of people with BED also suffer from depression. It is thought that negative emotions (anxiety, shame, and guilt) contribute to out-of-control eating behaviors.
Symptoms of Binge Eating Disorder (BED)

- Frequent episodes of eating what others would consider an abnormally large amount of food
- Frequent feelings of being unable to control what or how much is being eaten
- Eating much more rapidly than usual
- Eating until uncomfortably full
- Eating large amounts of food, even when not physically hungry
- Eating alone out of embarrassment at the quantity of food being eaten
- Feelings of disgust, depression, or guilt after overeating
- Fluctuations in weight
- Feelings of low self-esteem
- Frequent dieting
